But what exactly is such a varied and healthy diet?
Five different food categories have been identified for maintaining mental health (see illustration). These five categories have been summarised by Harvard University and other scientific organisations.
Fish and nuts are rich in n3 fatty acids, berries and coffee/tea are rich in antioxidants and these substances have a proven positive effect on our mental health.
But why are leafy greens so important for mental health?
A high intake of leafy vegetables is directly linked to good mental health
Various scientific studies have shown that the intake of leafy vegetables in particular is associated with good mental health in the human body. Until now, it was not known which substances in leafy vegetables were responsible for these positive effects on our mental health.
Both the World Health Organisation (WHO) and the German Nutrition Society (DGE) recommend a diet rich in fruit and vegetables.
BUT:
Only 5 – 20% of the Western population follow this recommendation, and this leads to a lack of active substances from fruit and vegetables in 80-95% of the population.
The identification of a new vitamin
In 2021, a new vitamin, vitamin A5, was identified. The discoverers, Dr. Wojtek Krezel from the University of Strasbourg in France, Prof. Dr. Angel R. de Lera from the University of Vigo, Spain and Dr Ralph Rühl - formerly at the University of Debrecen, Hungary - are not only the discoverers, but also the founding team of the company CISCAREX.
This new vitamin was identified in humans and in human food. Surprisingly, the concentrations were particularly high in leafy vegetables.
And what is different about vitamin A5?
The term vitamin A is incorrectly used in a simplified way when referring to the substance vitamin A(1). This vitamin A is already present in many food supplements as vitamin A(1) or in the plant-based version, provitamin A(1). This vitamin A(1)-mediated signalling transmits its effects via a specific key - lock activation mechanism.
The newly discovered vitamin, vitamin A5, is closely related to vitamin A(1) in its chemical structure.
BUT:
Vitamin A(1) cannot be converted to vitamin A5 in the human body. Vitamin A5 mediates its effect via a different key - lock mechanism that cannot be activated by vitamin A(1).
This is why we also need an intake of vitamin A5 independently of vitamin A(1).
In which foods is vitamin A5 mainly present?
Vitamin A5 is mainly found in the human diet in the plant form provitamin A5. This provitamin A5 is found in fruit and vegetables and especially in leafy vegetables and root vegetables.
For our product MIN A5® we use a plant-based algae extract that contains much higher concentrations of vitamin A5. By taking one capsule, we absorb the amount of vitamin A5 contained in about 5 units of fruit and vegetables.
